I met with David Schler, documentary filmmaker yesterday afternoon to discuss the possibility of making an artist video. In the course of our conversation David asked me if I worked from photographs? I gave him my standard confusing answer…. “Yes and No”, yes in the sense that I take a lot of photographs and no in the sense that my work is not about replicating a photograph. One of my favorite aspects of being a painter, a landscape painter is that it changes everything about how I look at nature. I am not sure there are enough words to convey how meaningful this is and how it changes one’s relationship to everything around them. My work is a lot about mood and feeling so the light quality at sunrise, sunset and passing storms offer the most opportunity to convey those feelings. The photograph that inspired the painting next to it was taken on a visit to see my parents. They live just south of Montgomery Alabama.
