Let the beauty we love be what we do. ~Rumi ~

In my last post we talked about the aesthetic quality of softness in painting.  Naturally clouds are the perfect subject matter to explore softness along with variety of light quality.  Here are some of my favorite cloud paintings and the photos that have inspired them.   I am particularly taken by the little “lone” clouds.  When driving  from my studio in town to home about eight miles south of Santa Fe I am often struck by the single clouds floating in the vast blue sky, all by themselves, and I can’t help but wonder why they are there???  They do get your attention because the rest of the sky is so empty, and out here in New Mexico we have a lot of sky. It is a pleasurable end to the day to watch what the clouds are doing, what kind they are, which direction they are moving, then stop on the quiet dirt roads and take photographs.  Currently in my new paintings I am exploring some of the whips of clouds and value variations in storms and sunsets, however in a more abstract way than the cloud “portraits” .
